What does it feel like to have something on?
It feels like having a fire in your heart, a relentless push to make shit happen. Being at the cusp of something great. Carrying the momentum of happening forward.
It feels like having the vision, the desire, the feeling; and the only thing stopping you is logistical constipation. A bit like impatience. Because you've had a taste of how it feels to be fucking great, and you want to keep chasing that greatness and bringing it to new heights, but the infrastructure doesn't exist yet.
So you build it yourself. From the foundations. Contact the community groups and bring awareness to the importance of the Brisbane underground music scene and how it's the lifeblood for so many young people. DM and chat with bands and connect the dots for the supersonic thing you have in mind.
Creatively, I'm at an all time high. I look at posters and work by other writers and can feel the decisions the graphic designers made to give off the vibe that the event they're presenting doesn't even need to 'try'; they already knew how people were going to react, already had it designed in their head, and were just putting it onto paper.
I can feel how the great gonzo music journalists of the '60s and '70s just wrote and wrote and wrote about how it felt to actually be at a place where shit was happening, instead of trying to make it all 'objective' and draining out the human emotion until it reads like nothing.
When you have something on, whenever inspiration or an idea strikes, you execute. You know what to do and how to do it. Every creative knows that flow state. When you sit down and play your guitar and the notes just come to you and just like that, you've written a song good enough to remember next time you pick it up. When you feel a certain way and know how to write about it and bam, another article. When you try out a new design idea based on something you saw in a cool poster and it just works.
The grifty YouTube video essayists and course-sellers want you to stick to a formula, buy their bullshit course that's basically paying someone to gaslight you into thinking you need their permission to create good shit, and buy their sponsored font or proprietary software that's a rehash of something better that exists for free.
Fuck that. Fuck having a bland brand image you keep the same for six months until you change it again because someone told you to. Being creative means trying new things. Seeing shit that looks cool and adopting bits and bobs from your inspirations because it works for what you're going for, instead of paying someone else to do it for you. That feeling of yearning, of seeking, that IS the creation process.
