It's late April. Man, it's been so long. My life has changed quite a lot since February. Last term, I pushed myself to get the highest grades possible. I did it to go insane with what my parents want of me, rebellion by going over the top if you will. I got full marks in 4/6 subjects, and got all As, but all of that work left me burnt out by the end. I had hoped that the holidays would be my opportunity to have some fun and hang out with friends, but rainy weather and people being 'busy' prevented that from happening. One thing I learnt is that so many relationships are inherently shallow, and you can't do anything about it. I also learnt that I thrive best when I'm able to express and do stuff, and it's when I try to fit into others' groups that I end up being the least significant person.
Reassessing my life, it's pretty damn good. I've been able to make a bunch of connections through just talking to people and bumming around in the city, and on one very special day, I spontaneously met a bunch of people, and we formed a little 'queen street crew'. We had never met, but it was thanks to fate that we were in that specific place in time and space in front of the Queen Street Mall fountains. It was insane. That hangout soon led other people to begin hanging out around Queen Street again, like the old days, and a spot called 'churchie' was where a lot of the magic happened. It got shut down a few days ago, but damn, it was pretty insane.
So what am I doing these days? Not much. It's a new term, and my goal is not to get insane grades, but prioritise my own happiness, find new friends, and find freedom through my art again. Honestly there haven't been that many gigs as of late, so I'm really hoping that they will start back up again. Making this zine is a way to provide a voice to the bands and musicians ignored by the mainstream, and it's a way for me to express myself. Really, I feel like making this issue is what I need to reconnect with my passion, and inspire others to find freedom through music.
In this issue, we have a really special interview with My Daydreams, a very unique 'confessional' duo, and a chat with Amy, member of Warpseer and Fellsun. My concept behind this issue is to showcase the experimental acts within the scene, and pretty much show what they're all about. Have at it!
