Breakbone: Hi Guy, really nice show you put on.
Guy: We had tons of bands, tons of epic moshing.
Breakbone: How did you think it went?
Guy: I think it went well. I was nervous at the beginning of the day because we were on a bit late, but I think it went really well in the end. I was happy with the turnout and everyone had fun.
Breakbone: When you're on stage, what do you think to yourself? What's your artistic motivation, emotional drive?
Guy: While I'm singing?
Breakbone: Yeah, what goes through your head?
Guy: Mostly nothing. Normally I'm just... because I really enjoy it. I just kind of... Some of the songs are a little bit more personal, I kind of think about the stuff around that. But a lot of it, I'm just enjoying it, looking at the crowd, making sure people are okay and just being really grateful because I'm really lucky. We've played to nobody before. I'm really lucky that I get to do this.
Breakbone: And who got you into music?
Guy: I think my parents played just a lot of... They don't really play that much, but they would play a lot of music. There was pretty much always music going, and then I kind of explored and then friends showed me different things and then I learnt people from the scene. And then just my own exploration, really, just getting into heavier and heavier shit.
Breakbone: What's your approach to songwriting?
Guy: To songwriting? Depends on the song. A lot of songs kind of start out with a riff or lyrics and then I build it around that, but most of it starts off with a riff and then I build it from there.
Breakbone: I'm really curious about your song 'North Star'. It sounds really deep and personal. What made you write that awesome song?
Guy: That song is kind of about mental health and kind of having that guiding light, that person that kind of helps you when you're not going through the best of times, that person that really struggled with his mental health, and I kind of wrote that song about him getting through that time, kind of following, making sure there is a little bit of a light at the end of the tunnel.
Breakbone: I think it's really relatable, and I guess for you, music is your guiding light, right?
Guy: Yeah, for me, the music, yeah, it is. It helps me get through a lot of stuff when I'm pissed off or I'm happy about something. I don't really write things when I'm happy, but when I'm pissed off or sad about something or I've got something I want to make a statement about, like "Left For Us," our new song, that was actually the second song I ever wrote years ago, but I brought it back this year, so I could never really get it right, and that's kind of about climate change and stuff, so it's something that really pisses me off because people don't do enough about it.
Breakbone: What is the purpose of Findaway? What's your vision for the future?
Guy: I think my vision for the future is I want to be able to do this forever. This is my passion. I love playing music. I love getting out here and doing stuff of all ages and the free shit, because that's how I got in. I'm still 17. I can't go to everything. It's really annoying when there's a gig and it's like, oh, fuck, I can't go to that. You're going to go to the free shit because I also have my money. Yeah, it's fun, and I think finally I want it to be something that can be for everybody in the long run. It is for everybody, but keep that, even when we get a bit bigger, keep that going.
Breakbone: What do you think about the state of the scene right now? Where do you think it's going?
Guy: I think the scene had a bit of a lull. Yeah, definitely. I think it's starting to come back again. Yeah. That's why I thought it would be a good idea to do something like this. We raised so much money. I'm so grateful to everyone that bought a raffle ticket. I think it's starting to come back. I think a lot of bands were starting that were a bit younger. When we started, we're getting into Year 12 right now, so it's been quiet. People are really busy. We're all about to graduate, but now we actually have time to do shit again, so I think it's starting to come back. All right.
Breakbone: What are your plans for the future?
Guy: To keep doing this. We've got a big thing. I won't share too much. It's kind of like two weeks. People will be able to find out. We've got some big plans for the end of the year. They'll get to find something out next week, and then the week after there's a massive thing. Massive? Yeah. For the end of the year. We want to do a lot next year. We'll be graduated, so we'll just have more time to do this.
Breakbone: Yeah. Thanks for sharing your story and helping us find a way. Yeah. Because I think a lot of people found their way at this gig.
Guy: That's right. I just try and have opportunities for people to come and watch and get their anger out. It's a good escape. Yeah, it is. It's an escape for us.
Breakbone: Yeah. It's good. What do you think about the bands that are in the scene at the moment and the audience?
Guy: I think I haven't actually been able to go too much because they've been really busy.
Breakbone: Oh, yeah, yeah.
Guy: All the bands today were really sick. I think when we started, it was more like punk. People kind of gave it around. But now people are starting to get a lot heavier. But now I think we're getting more punk back, which is really sick.
Breakbone: Punk is awesome. Rock and roll is awesome. Metal is also awesome. I really like your taste in metal, your take on the concept. It's really authentic and down to earth.
Guy: Thank you. I appreciate it.
Breakbone: By far, your band is one of the best bands in the entire scene, possibly even the world.
Guy: Thank you.
